Theory of Non-Equilibrium Stationary States as a Theory of Resonances

چکیده
We study a small quantum system (e.g. a simplified model for an atom or molecule) interacting with two bosonic or fermionic reservoirs (say, photon or phonon fields). We show that the combined system has a family of stationary states, parametrized by two numbers T1, T2 (“reservoir temperatures”). If T1 6= T2, then these states are non-equilibrium, stationary states (NESS). In the latter case we show that they have nonvanishing heat fluxes and positive entropy production. Furthermore, we show that these states are dynamically asymptotically stable. The latter means that the evolution with an initial condition, normal with respect to any state where the reservoirs are in equilibria at temperatures T1 and T2, converges to the corresponding NESS. Our results are valid for the temperatures satisfying the bound min(T1, T2) > g , where g is the coupling constant and 0 < α < 1 is a power related to the infra-red behaviour of the coupling functions.

Generalized Wavefunctions for Correlated Quantum Oscillators III: Chaos, Irreversibility
In this third of a series of four articles, we continue the study of the representations of the dynamical transformations of systems of correlated quantized oscillators. By including generalized wave function solutions to Schrödinger’s equation (belonging to a rigged Hilbert space), and by considering the algebra of observables as a whole, the presence of Devaney chaos, hyperbolic quasi-invaria...

Jaynes’ information theory formalism of statistical mechanics is applied to the stationary states of open, non-equilibrium systems. First, it is shown that the probability distribution p of the underlying microscopic phase space trajectories over a time interval of length τ satisfies p ∝ exp(τσ /2kB) where σ is the time-averaged rate of entropy production of . Three consequences of this result ...
متن کاملPerturbation Theory and Atomic Resonances Since Schrödinger’s Time
Abstract. Quantum theory makes a sharp distinction between bound states and scattering states, the former associated with point spectrum and the latter with continuous spectrum. Resonances associated with quasi-stationary states bridge this distinction, and have posed mathematical challenges since the beginning of the Schrödinger theory. Here the development of mathematical aspects of resonance...
متن کاملOn Approximate Stationary Radial Solutions for a Class of Boundary Value Problems Arising in Epitaxial Growth Theory
In this paper, we consider a non-self-adjoint, singular, nonlinear fourth order boundary value problem which arises in the theory of epitaxial growth. It is possible to reduce the fourth order equation to a singular boundary value problem of second order given by w''-1/r w'=w^2/(2r^2 )+1/2 λ r^2. The problem depends on the parameter λ and admits multiple solutions. Therefore, it is difficult to...

We show that if T1 is not equal to T2 then the combined system has a stationary, non-equilibrium state (NESS). We show that this state has nonvanishing heat fluxes and positive entropy productio...
